Legal Disclaimer

Last updated: August 4, 2026

Please read this disclaimer carefully before relying on anything published on railroadconsulting.com. It applies to the whole site, including the safety quiz, the Certificate of Completion, the Library, the Steam Locomotive Registry, the Excursion Calendar and Map, Locomotive Alerts, the Soundboard, the blog, and every other page.

Training is supplemental

Supplemental Railroad Safety Training is provided by a third party company, Thomas Railroad Consulting. Everything taught on this site is supplemental and educational. It does not replace, satisfy, or override the safety training, rules qualification, or certification required by your employer, your railroad, or any federal or state agency.

Your employer’s rulebook always governs. Safety and operating rules differ between railroads and between industrial sites, and they are revised over time. If anything on this site conflicts with the rules in force at your workplace, follow your workplace rules and ask your supervisor.

The Certificate of Completion is not a qualification

Passing the quiz and receiving a Certificate of Completion shows that you answered every question on this site’s rules quiz correctly. That is all it shows. It does not qualify, certify, or license you to perform any rail duty. It does not make you a certified conductor, engineer, or rail worker. It does not by itself satisfy any regulatory or employer training requirement, and it should never be presented as though it does.

Not professional or legal advice

Content on this site, including any consulting material, safety audit information, and written guidance, is general information. It is not legal advice, not regulatory compliance advice, and not a substitute for a qualified professional assessing your specific operation. Do not act, or decline to act, solely on the basis of something you read here.

Accuracy and completeness

We make a genuine effort to keep this site accurate, but we do not warrant that any of it is complete, current, or error free. In particular:

  • Excursion schedules are set by the operating railroads, not by us. They change, sell out, and cancel frequently, sometimes on the day of travel. Always confirm directly with the operator before making travel plans or spending money.
  • Locomotive Alerts is a free service provided as-is. We do not guarantee that an alert will be sent, that it will arrive in time to be useful, or that the schedule behind it is still valid.
  • The Steam Locomotive Registry is compiled from public sources. Specifications, ownership, locations, and operating status change, and historical records sometimes disagree with each other.
  • Rail line and track ownership data shown on the map comes from OpenStreetMap and is incomplete in places. An absence of track for a given owner may mean the data was never tagged, not that no track exists.
  • Library documents remain the property of their publishers and are provided for convenience. Always work from the edition your employer issues you.

Merchandise and affiliate links

Thomas Railroad Consulting does not sell, stock, or ship any of the merchandise featured on this site. Those links go to Amazon search results so you always see what is actually in stock. Some links on this site may be affiliate links, meaning we could earn a small commission if you buy something, at no additional cost to you. This never affects what we choose to feature.
