Fred Gurley No. 3 was built by Baldwin in 1894 as a Forney-type 0-4-4T for the Louisiana sugar industry, hauling cane for the Lafourche, Raceland & Longport Railway before later serving as a plantation switch engine. By the mid-1950s the deteriorated locomotive was discovered at a Louisiana equipment yard.
Disney’s team, led by machinist Roger Broggie, purchased the locomotive to expand the Disneyland Railroad beyond its two Disney Studio-built engines, having it completely rebuilt at the Disney Studios’ machine shop. It entered service on the Disneyland Railroad on March 28, 1958, named for Fred G. Gurley, then chairman of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway — the park railroad’s corporate sponsor.
The locomotive underwent a major rebuild in 2007–2008, receiving a new boiler and conversion to biodiesel fuel. It remains in active daily service on the Disneyland Railroad today, and is considered the oldest operating piece of railroad equipment in any Disney park.
