No. 630 is a 2-8-0 “Consolidation” type locomotive built in February 1904 by the American Locomotive Company’s Richmond Works for the Southern Railway, one of the road’s Ks-1 class freight engines (builder’s number 28446). As delivered it ran without superheaters, using Stephenson valve gear and flat slide valves; in 1917 Southern modernized the locomotive with a superheater, piston valves and improved valve gear, substantially boosting its efficiency. No. 630 spent its working life on branch-line and mainline freight, including assignments on the Murphy Branch and the Asheville Division in the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee.

Southern retired No. 630 from revenue freight service in 1952 and sold it to the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad, where it worked as ET&WNC No. 207. In 1967, Southern Railway reacquired the locomotive in a trade for a diesel switcher, bringing it back into the fold as part of its growing steam excursion program; it ran mainline specials through the late 1960s, 1970s and into 1989. The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum took custody of No. 630 under lease in 1978 and the railroad donated it outright to the museum in 1998.

TVRM completed a ground-up, twelve-year restoration of No. 630 in 2011, one of the most extensive steam locomotive rebuilds since the end of the steam era, including a new boiler, cab and firebox. The restored engine returned to excursion service in 2011 and ran in Norfolk Southern’s 21st Century Steam program through 2014 before continuing to power TVRM trains such as the Missionary Ridge Local. No. 630 is notable as one of the very last steam locomotives to run in regular Southern Railway freight service and for the thoroughness of its 21st-century rebuild.
