Design and Construction
No. 1 was built in Boston in 1866 by Campbell, Whittier and Company to the design of Sylvester Marsh, the New Hampshire businessman and inventor who conceived the idea of a cog railway to the summit of Mount Washington after supposedly getting lost and nearly perishing in a storm on the mountain years earlier. Marsh originally christened the locomotive “Hero,” but its odd silhouette, a tall vertical boiler mounted on trunnions so that it would automatically stay upright regardless of the grade the engine was climbing, quickly earned it a more memorable nickname. According to the most commonly repeated version of the story, an onlooker at a public demonstration compared the shape to a bottle of pepper sauce, and in the local Yankee pronunciation “peppersauce” came out as “Peppersass,” a name that stuck for good. The vertical boiler design was not just cosmetic: it solved the very real engineering problem of keeping water covering the crown sheet on grades as steep as 37 percent, among the steepest adhesion and rack railway grades ever built. Marsh also devised a means of using air pressure trapped in the steam cylinders to help control the locomotive’s descent, an early and important safety feature on a railway with no historical precedent to draw from.
Construction Trials and Early Service, 1866 to 1878
Peppersass proved itself in a demonstration run in late August 1866 on the first several hundred feet of completed rack track, convincing skeptical investors and government officials that Marsh’s scheme for climbing Mount Washington by rail was not, as some had assumed, an engineering fantasy. The locomotive served as the primary motive power through the remainder of construction and the railway’s earliest years of operation, including the historic first ascent to the summit on July 3, 1869, the moment that made the Mount Washington Cog Railway the world’s first mountain-climbing rack railway. As the railway matured and acquired more capable locomotives built to essentially the same rack principle, Peppersass was retired from regular service by 1878, its work as a proof-of-concept and construction engine essentially complete.
The 1929 Anniversary Run and Accident
Peppersass returned to the rails only once after its 1870s retirement, for a ceremonial run on July 20, 1929, marking the sixtieth anniversary of the railway’s first ascent to the summit. The celebration ended in tragedy. Descending Jacob’s Ladder, one of the steepest sections of track on the mountain, a tooth broke loose from the engine’s drive gear and the friction brake was unable to hold the locomotive against the grade. The engine accelerated out of control, jumped the rails, and plunged off a trestle into Burt’s Ravine below. The train’s crew managed to jump clear and survived with injuries, but photographer Daniel P. Rossiter, who had been riding along to document the anniversary, fell to his death in the wreck. Remarkably, the locomotive’s boiler did not rupture in the crash, and the wrecked pieces of Peppersass were later gathered and reassembled into a static display rather than scrapped.
Static Display and Recognition
Since being rebuilt from the wreckage, Peppersass has remained a non-operating static display at the Cog Railway’s Marshfield Base Station, the starting point for the modern railway’s trains up the mountain. It has been given periodic cosmetic restoration over the decades, including conservation work timed to travel as part of a Northeast museum tour, to keep its paint and fittings presentable for the many visitors who see it as the first thing they encounter before boarding a train up the mountain. Fittingly, given the photographer’s fate in 1929, one of the historical photographs associated with the locomotive today is itself credited to Daniel P. Rossiter, a quiet reminder of the cost paid to document the railway’s early history. Peppersass has been recognized by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers as a Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark, one of a small number of individual locomotives (as opposed to entire railway systems) to receive that designation, in recognition of its role as the machine that proved rack railway technology could conquer a mountain as formidable as Mount Washington.
Current Status
Peppersass remains on permanent, non-operational display at Marshfield Base Station, owned and maintained by the Mount Washington Cog Railway itself rather than by an outside museum. It is not part of the railway’s operating excursion fleet and has not run under its own power since the 1929 accident. Its significance rests entirely on its role as the machine that started mountain rack railroading in North America, not on any ongoing service history, and the Cog Railway presents it accordingly as a preserved artifact and cautionary historical marker rather than as working equipment.
