Ward Kimball No. 5 was built by Baldwin in 1902 as a 0-4-4T for the Laurel Valley Sugar Plantation near Thibodaux, Louisiana, where it hauled sugarcane under the name “Maud L.” It later moved to Cedar Point amusement park in Ohio, where a leading truck was added.
Disney acquired the locomotive in a trade with Cedar Point in 1999, undertaking an extensive frame-up restoration that included a new boiler and cab. It entered service on the Disneyland Railroad on June 25, 2005, timed to coincide with the park’s 50th anniversary.
The engine was named in memory of Ward Kimball (1914–2002), a Walt Disney Animation Studios animator and one of Disney’s “Nine Old Men,” who was also a devoted railroad enthusiast. Notably, No. 5 is the only Disneyland Railroad locomotive not named for a Santa Fe Railway executive — its headlight bears a gold-leaf silhouette of Jiminy Cricket, one of Kimball’s best-known character designs, as a personal tribute. As of the most recent reporting, the locomotive is out of service undergoing overhaul.
